Thy National Park – Denmark’s largest wilderness

Thy National Park is Denmark’s first national park, and was established in 2007, with official inauguration on 22 August 2008. The area covers 24,370 ha and stretches over a belt up to 12 km wide from Agger Tange in the south to the lighthouse in Hanstholm in the north. To the east, the park is bounded by agricultural land.

The western part of Thy has been shaped by centuries of sand drift and today contains large national and international natural areas in the form of coast, sand dunes, dunes, lakes and dune plantations. In the area, arctic and southern European nature types meet. The dunes are of European importance and have many dwarf bushes, but relatively little heather. In addition, there is an exciting and valuable interplay between cultural history and nature, which is a key part of the idea of a national park in Thy. The strong wind and the sand flight on land left abandoned agricultural areas, which today are dunes or plantations. All of this is testimony to a time not many generations ago when life on the West Coast was tough for the locals.

In Thy National Park you can go exploring and get up close to North Jutland’s unique nature. In National Park Thy there is time to experience the vastness, get sand between your toes and a lot of nature-rich experiences. You can walk between vast, wind-swept wastelands and aromatic pines or plunge into the glistening waves of the North Sea or cycle through cool dune plantations.

The national park is a continuous natural area for people, plants and animals. Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve, located in the northern part of the national park, has more than 30 different bird species, and the otter has found refuge in the protected area’s lakes.

Agger Tange – in the southern part of the national park – is one of Northern Europe’s most important resting places for many flocks of migratory birds. Tangen has been designated as an international bird protection area.

At the same time, the national park is an important part of Danish history. The area covers several burial mounds from the Bronze Age, and the many German bunkers along the coast are reminiscent of a time when, during the German occupation, Denmark was on the front line for an expected attack by the allied forces during the Second World War.

The weather and nature are constantly changing in National Park Thy, from strong winds full of salty sea air at the coasts to gentle breezes in the wet, steaming forest floor. But no matter how you move around the park, you can feel the grandeur of the area.

Hawkraft Cultural Hotel – Accommodation setting for nature and cultural experiences

Hawkraft Kulturhotel is a different hotel for people and for nature and cultural experiences. The cultural hotel is set up in a culturally historical setting in Vestervig’s old hospital on the edge of Thy National Park, the Limfjord and the North Sea. The forces of the sea are the supporting element in the area. Here, the sky is high, the sea roaring and the wind cleansing the body and soul, giving energy and zest for life and opening up creativity. At Hawkraft there is a drop of sea and culture in everything we do. On

In the cultural and historical framework of the former Vestervig Hospital, we can offer you to sleep in a delivery room or in the X-ray department. All rooms are furnished with new luxury beds and furniture in raw industrial design spiced with funky flea finds. The Hawfruen has green fingers and the geraniums thrive in green oases everywhere in the old corridors. Here there is homely coziness and space to both be yourself and participate in the communities in the common areas. Guests have their own kitchen in the former operating theater – and here you can make coffee and tea, which is included in the stay. The music and lecture hall is set up in the former rehabilitation building with a beautiful skylight at the top of the pyramid roof.

When you are a guest with us, the good hospitality and heart room is a completely natural part of the experience.

Our cultural meals are held as a communal meal with a subsequent event. It can be a concert, a play or an evening with an author on stage. It is always the case that everyone immediately feels safe in our homely surroundings, and from this arises the sense of community and the fantastic experiences together.

Lodbjerg Lighthouse – A cultural-historical gem in the middle of the wilderness

One of the main attractions in Thy National Park is Lodbjerg Lighthouse, which stands alone in the middle of a large heath and plantation area. The lighthouse was built in 1883 and lit for the first time on 28 November 1884. The lighthouse is 35 meters high and the light has a height of 48 meters above sea level. Access to the lighthouse is open every day of the year from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Lodbjerg Lighthouse housed three families who were tasked with looking after the lighthouse around the clock. They each had their own accommodation in the small lighthouse complex, where everything was neatly divided according to rank. In the lighthouse keeper’s old living room, you can today visit the coffee room, where volunteer coffee room hosts welcome and sell coffee/tea, juice and home-made baked goods.

In the old henhouse, which is open all year round, there is space to enjoy the food you have brought, cozy up by the wood-burning stove or borrow a backpack with adventure equipment on your trip. Notice the three old chicken gates on the house’s facade. Even the henhouse was divided into three, so you had control over whose eggs were whose.

In the forest behind the henhouse is the shelter area with a large group shelter, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, smaller shelters.

The troll Ash from AshojOn a troll hunt in the forest with Thy’s highest point

Up on the hill Ashoj, which with its 93 meters is Thy’s highest point, there is a troll hiding in the forest. In a secret place, in the middle of a clearing in Ashoj Plantage, sits the troll Ash from Ashoj with a stone in one hand and a stick in the other. Through a treasure hunt of tracks in the forest, you can find out where Ash is sitting.

The troll lures guests and locals out to experience the beautiful nature, which is also part of Thy and very nice, even though it is not part of Thy National Park.

The troll was created by the international artist Thomas Dambo in the summer of 2020 and represents the forces of nature. “If you treat nature badly, the trolls will come and beat you, eat your children or kill your hamster. But if you behave properly, it may help you build a nest, climb a tree or over the pelvis”, says Thomas Dambo.

Especially for families with slightly older children, the treasure hunt in the green is a fun activity. And the fairy-tale wooden creature doesn’t just serve as a goal for a walk in the green, but is also meant to be climbed on.

You can find the exact location and the corresponding tax map on Trollmap.

Aagaard Thy – Meeting place and workshops with craft traditions

Aagaard is a 220-year-old and rarely preserved quadrangular farm, restored with respect for the old building style and local customs. On the farm there is a handicraft shop, workshops with handicraft, wood, leather and textile work and we also house the microbrewery Aagaards beer house. The farm has beautiful green outdoor areas, a beautiful old garden with a stream and large old trees.

Aagaard is a popular place to visit for schools, companies, associations, clubs and assemblies etc.

At Aagaard, we delve into the artisanal cultural heritage in order to rediscover and pass on artisanal knowledge, methods and approaches, and thus contribute to creating tradition bearers who carry the artisanal cultural heritage forward. There is an inexhaustible source of solutions and creativity if you expand the craft timeline and see traditions in a contemporary context. When we hold workshops, we take the time it takes to do things properly. There must be peace and time for contemplation, a good story and a pleasant conversation and togetherness. It is important to us that it permeates all visits and stays at Aagaard. At the family workshop, we focus the process on you working together on a task, where the adults help the little ones and vice versa.

Feedback from visitors:

“Aagaard oozes with history, creativity and handicrafts, from textiles to wood to beer. We started our colleague fun day with the passionate Nikolaj at Aagaard, who gave a tour of the old buildings, and in the finest way intertwined the history of the place with the dreams of the future. In the workshop, we all finished making a slate serving board, where we were guided in slate scissors, cutting techniques, etc. During the cutting work, we tasted Thy eco juice from Sønderhå and the beer from “Aagaards Brewery” on the other side of the door during the tasting told about how the different brews were made with local flavors such as pine and sea buckthorn.
